NISSAN TAKES AUTONOMOUS TECH TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH SELF-DRIVING MOPS

Nissan has demonstrated its latest ProPilot autonomous driving technology using... mops.

Dubbed ProPilot Mop, Nissan brought its invention to a volleyball game. Three mops roamed around the court, using LED lights to simulate lanes to showcase how competent the autonomous driving technology is. Spoiler alert: the mops did well, and no collisions were recorded.

One of the mops even demonstrated the guided lane change and passing function. In the real world, this function assists drivers in overtaking slower traffic by switching to another lane and returning once the original road is clear.

Nissan's ProPilot autonomous driving technology has seven cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 sonar sensors, enabling hands-free driving. In its cars, the system also uses high-precision satellite positioning technology, though we doubt Nissan equipped its self-driving mops with this feature.

In the US, Nissan offers the 2.0 version of the tech in the Ariya EV. The Pilot and Empower variants come with the ProPilot Assist 2.0, while the higher-grade Evolve, Engage, and Venture variants add Navi-link, which uses navigation to enhance semi-autonomous technology.

Other standard driver assistance technologies include intelligent cruise control, intelligent forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Nissan also plans to release its more comprehensive self-driving technology, "Ground Truth Perception," by the mid-2020s. By 2030, this technology is expected to be available on every Nissan model, which should complement the launching of 27 electrified models (including 19 EVs) in the next seven years under the Nissan Ambition 2030.

While we await more developments in the autonomous driving sector, Mercedes-Benz is at the forefront of the race as it is the first automaker to receive certification from California state authorities for its SAE Level 3 Drive Pilot System.
